If you are tired of being embarrassed by unsightly spider veins on your legs, it may be time to get rid of them for good and feel confident in your own skin again. At Daphne I Panagotacos, M.D., we help patients in the Thousand Oaks area address their spider and varicose veins with sclerotherapy.

What is sclerotherapy treatment?

Sclerotherapy is one of the most commonly used treatments for spider veins because of its high success rate. The sclerosing solution is injected directly into the vein, causing it to collapse and then dissolve. Visibility of the vein will gradually decrease over time. The body will redirect blood flow through healthy veins. With sclerotherapy, up to 80 percent of veins injected will disappear from sight completely.

After treatment, patients will be instructed to wear support hose for up to two weeks. This keeps the veins compressed and helps the injected solution work effectively.

Candidates for sclerotherapy

Before recommending sclerotherapy for spider vein removal, we conduct a complete physical examination as well as a medical history to determine candidacy. Patients who are pregnant, or who have a history of diabetes, blood clots, or severe asthma are not good candidates for treatment.

Results from sclerotherapy

After sclerotherapy treatment, most patients notice a gradual elimination of the treated veins. During the recovery process, patients may notice raised red bumps, similar in appearance to a bug bite around the injection site. This will disappear after a few weeks. On average, most patients require about four sclerotherapy sessions, spaced several weeks apart for optimal results.

Side effects of sclerotherapy

Intense physical activity should be avoided for at least 48 hours after treatment, but most patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after the injection. Some common side effects include darkening of the veins and bruising around the injection site. Compression hose should be worn for at least one to two weeks after treatment to minimize side effects and promote healing.
