How sclerotherapy can help you in Westlake Village
During the summer, do you enjoy wearing shorts, or are you compelled to hide your legs in long pants because you are embarrassed by spider or varicose veins? While the majority of people who are affected by these conditions are female, they do also impact men. By age 50, nearly 25 percent of men, and 50 percent of women, will experience spider or varicose veins. Sclerotherapy is a simple and highly effective way to treat troublesome veins.
The first step involves a consultation with Dr. Panagotacos or a member of her staff, they will examine the area to be treated, and ensure that you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy. Your health and any mediation you are taking will be discussed, and any questions you may have will be answered.
The procedure involves a sclerosing agent injected into the affected veins. The sclerosing agent then damages veins wall resulting in it swelling and a blood clot forming closing it off. The treated vein then becomes scar tissue and the body will reabsorb it.
Once the injection is completed, compression bandages will be placed on the treated area. These keep the sclerosing agent in the veins and prevent them from reopening. You will be asked to walk after the treatment has concluded. This helps prevent complications and redirects the blood from the treated veins into healthy vessels. The number of veins and size of the area being treated determine the length of time needed to complete the procedure. Most of the time, it does not take more than 45 minutes.
As is the case with most injections, bruising is common after the treatment. With this treatment, the bruising may last for a couple of weeks. This is the most frequent side effect; your doctor will discuss all possible side effects before beginning the treatment.
While you will see an immediate change in the appearance of the treated area, it can take about a month for the veins to disappear completely. In some cases, it can take two or more treatments to achieve the desired results. Larger areas typically require more sessions.
This is a minimally invasive procedure, so it requires no downtime. You will be able to drive home, or return to work. While you will be advised to avoid strenuous activities, light to moderate exercise is encouraged. You will receive instructions on how to care for the treated area and what to avoid.
