Westlake Village dermatologist shares what to expect with Juvéderm treatment and its many benefits
Many patients who visit the office of Dr. Daphne I. Panagotacos are interested in learning about the different non-surgical methods available for restoring youth to the face. The good news is that there are great, minimally invasive options for mild to moderate fine lines and wrinkles. For these patients, we often recommend a versatile dermal filler called Juvéderm. If you are interested in learning more about Juvéderm, we invite you to call 805-379-3376 for a consultation.
What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm is a type of long-lasting dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid. This substance, which is found naturally in the body, is easily absorbed and effective at attracting water to fill in sunken areas and keep skin looking more youthful for up to a year. Juvéderm can be used on many areas of the face including: nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and even plumping up aging lips. When injected directly into problem areas, Juvéderm can resolve skin laxity due to aging and sun damage. Many patients choose Juvéderm because it restores youth in a subtle, natural looking way. It is approved by the FDA for cosmetic improvement of the face and the smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.
Benefits of Juvéderm
One of the biggest benefits of Juvéderm is that patients experience immediate rejuvenation. Other benefits include:
- Smooth consistency means no bumps or rippling
- Versatile use on different areas of the face
What to expect before Juvéderm injections
The first step to receiving Juvéderm injections is to complete a consultation appointment at the office of Dr. Daphne I. Panagotacos. During this consultation, an examination of the skin is done to determine if Juvéderm is the best anti-aging treatment.
Prior to injections, patients should discontinue use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications for 7-10 days prior to injections as they can increase the likelihood of bruising. Always consult with your physician prior to discontinuing any medications. Patients who have active herpes simplex (cold sores) should avoid Juvéderm injections.
What to expect during Juvéderm injections
Juvéderm is a smooth gel that is injected with thin needles, making the procedure comfortable. We can apply a numbing cream to the treatment areas prior to injections to minimize discomfort.
Juvéderm is injected directly into the wrinkles or the areas that the patient has decided to address with treatment. As the injections are done, we will massage the area to help sculpt and mold the product to improve the results.
What to expect following Juvéderm treatment
It is completely normal for there to be some irregularities in appearance, often related to swelling, following the treatment. This will resolve quickly and does not indicate unsuccessful treatment.
When addressing areas of thinner skin, such as around the lips or under the eyes, we may opt to use small amounts of filler in order to see how the gel settles. During the follow-up visit, we can determine if it’s necessary to add additional filler in these areas. We always treat conservatively in order to provide beautiful, yet natural-looking results. We want your friends and family to notice that you look younger and refreshed, but not be able to tell that you “had work done.”
In the first 24 hours following treatment, it’s important to avoid strenuous exercise and avoid touching the treatment area. Any bruising that occurs can be covered with makeup.
In the first two weeks following treatment, patients should make sure to wear sunscreen and avoid extended exposure to sun, heat, or cold.
Minor bruising and swelling are normal and typically subsides within one to two days. Because hyaluronic acid attracts water, it is also normal to have extra fullness in the treatment areas for up to two weeks as the filler softens and settles, ultimately yielding the desired results. Because of this, we recommend that all patients wait at least two weeks to assess their satisfaction of the results. At that time, we will have patients return to the office to evaluate the results and make sure they are happy.
