Out of all of the incredible systems of the human body, the integumentary system is one of the most fascinating and resilient. The integumentary system, better known as the skin, hair, and nails is the largest ‘organ’ of the human body. Its responsibility to protect the body, cool the body, and act as a filtering system are all important parts of what the skin does to make sure humans are healthy and happy.

The skin has several layers, each with an important task. The epidermis, the first layer of skin, is the first line of physical defense against pathogens, UV rays, fluid loss, damage from wounds, and temperature fluctuations. The next layer, the dermis, contains the nerve endings, hair follicles, connective tissues, blood vessels, and sweat glands. The layer of tissue closest to the muscle is the hypodermis. While not an actual layer of skin, its purpose is to connect the skin to the base structures of muscle and bone. This layer consists mostly of adipose (fat) which serves as fleshy insulation for the organs of the body.
There are many things, other than physical harm, that can damage the skin. Skin damage can be caused by many things, including:
- Overexposure to UV rays
- Overexposure to the cold
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals
- Lack of proper skin care
- Poor diet
- Complete lack of exposure to the sun
Believe it or not, one of the best ways to care for skin besides keeping regular appointments with a skin care specialist is to eat a diet rich in nutrients that benefit the skin. These nutrients include:
- Vitamin A – fights acne.
- Vitamin D – helps regulate the immune system and can actually be absorbed through the skin from the sun.
- Vitamin C – an antioxidant.
- Vitamin E – an antioxidant that, in conjunction with Vitamin A, can help protect the skin from harmful effects of UVB rays.
